Mollie Norma Counsel (Nana) was born in North Wonthaggi in 1921. The youngest of the Whitehouse children, she was the only daughter of Gordon Reginald Whitehouse and Eliza Mary Caddy, who moved to Wonthaggi from Creswick, near Ballarat, in 1910. Her father was a miner. He died of pneumonia when she was 18 months old.
